How to use two or more WRT54Gs to extend a WiFi network

WDS is clumsy and hard to configure.
WiFi repeaters cost more than a router.
If you have sufficient wired network, but want to extend the range of an existing wireless router over a large area, the simplest, cheapest way to do it is with your garden variety Linksys WRT54G routers — you don’t even need to flash them to the Linux firmware.
I derived these instructions after searching all over the Internets, and I don’t remember the source, so I’ve got to re-post them for my own reference — and that of anyone else who wants to do this.

  • Connect a computer to the new, second router. Enter the router admin page using your browser.
  • Disable the DHCP server
  • Change the local IP address to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but below the range assigned by it’s DHCP server.
    • For example, your primary router probably has a local address of 192.168.1.1 and assigns IPs in the range 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150. In this case, a safe IP for you to use in your second router would be 192.168.1.2 — this also makes it easy to find later!
  • Apply the changes. (some reboots may be necessary)
  • Plug your wired network into one of the standard LAN ports on the new router — do not use the Internet/WAN port.
  • Reconnect to the admin page using the new IP address you just gave it.
  • Find the Advanced Routing page and change the router’s operating mode from Gateway to Router.
  • Configure the wireless settings of the new router to exactly match the wireless settings of your primary router (including SSID and security) but use a different wireless channel. Most sites recommend spacing out your channels by 3 or 4 to avoid interference and bleed.
    • For example, if your primary router is providing wireless on Channel 6, your secondary router could safely use Channel 2 or Channel 10.

Once these steps are done, laptops will be able to roam freely between access points, and will switch, without interruption, to the strongest available signal. I’ve used this successfully with 2-3 routers, and have had a strong, stable wireless network since.

Anonymous Gifts

100_3172.JPG This morning Nic opened the door to check out just how much snow was covering our cars (a lot), and found this attached to the door knob. The note says: Next time you hang out with teenagers… wear theseThe kit includes knee-pads, wrist-pads and elbow-pads.
We don’t know who you are, anonymous gift giver, and I can’t promise I’ll ever wear them (unless this personal-injury trend keeps up) but thank you!
Update: Turns out it was Dave Bookhout. You can see Dave dancing here

Things I've Observed

All pasta tastes better re-heated
I don’t know why, but everything from lasagna, to the custom pasta dish I got at Macaroni Grill (thank you Debbie and Northway Church for a nice date night) tastes even better a day later, re-heated in the microwave.
Americans must like pain killers
Every time I go to a doctor down here, they offer me “pain management” and are totally shocked when I decline, or opt to just take Tylenol when I really need it.
3 jobs is stressful
But it forces you to get really good at delegating.
Babies don’t like McDonald’s
If you think it does nasty things to you on the way through your digestive system, you should hear how a baby reacts when McDonald’s-based breast milk goes through his system.
God knew what He was doing when He gave us two arms
Seriously, doing everything one-handed is a pain in the butt!

3 Jobs, 3 Kinds of Pain

This week our pastor, and my friend Dave, are in Israel shooting footage for our Easter service. It’s called 24, and it’s going to be about the last 24 hours of Christ’s life. I’m really excited for Dave, cause this is his first time off the continent, but not as excited for myself — I got assigned his job this week while he’s gone. That makes 3 jobs I’m doing this week, and coincidently (but not related to any of them directly) I’m in 3 unique kinds of pain.
For my day job writing software, I have these horrible migraines that throb in time with the other pain.
For my second job managing I.T. I’m experiencing yet another round of hobbling lower back pain.
And for my new job this week, a gimpy arm that needs to be checked every day by a doctor.
Its only Monday, but I can already tell it’s going to be an awesome week. Fortunately, I put a sick day to use to deal with the doctor stuff (and avoid oozing from the arm at the office), and I’ve enlisted some help for my third job — thanks Steve, Bates and Joey! Now if only I could get my body to help out…

Benjamin in the Pool

Benjamin also went for his first swim ever this weekend. The camp had a wonderfully warm indoor pool, and Nic bought Ben the cutest little baby-swimming suit, so we both hopped in for awhile on Saturday afternoon. He took to the water like a fish, kicked around, and even got his face wet without freaking out. Here’s a little clip of him swimming with daddy — sorry about the quality, our camcorder was in use, so we had to use our digicam’s crude video feature…
